The awardees will be presented at the 4th Summit of the Nobel Sustainability Trust from November 20 to 21, 2024, in San Francisco. Eligible for the award are individuals from science and industry, as well as organizations and companies that promote the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals.

About the Awardees:

President Claudia Sheinbaum

Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability Medal

As former Mayor of Mexico City, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum championed sustainability through policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions and fostering urban resilience. Her initiatives included expanding public transportation, increasing green spaces, and promoting cycling, while also encouraging community involvement in environmental decision-making. Under her leadership, Mexico City committed to ambitious climate goals aligned with international agreements and prioritized the transition to renewable energy sources, such as solar power. Recognizing cities' vulnerabilities to climate change, Dr. Sheinbaum also focused on building resilient infrastructure and disaster preparedness programs to strengthen urban sustainability.

Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability Medal

As UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon played a key role in advancing the global climate agenda through the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, establishing frameworks for reducing emissions and addressing global challenges like poverty and inequality. He emphasized the link between sustainability and human rights, advocating for equitable solutions for vulnerable populations, and encouraged international collaboration among governments, businesses, and civil society. Even after his tenure, he remains active in promoting climate action through initiatives like the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens, leaving a lasting impact on global environmental policies.
